Talks, a movie, and a live satellite hook-up to one of the University of Rochester’s study abroad locations will spotlight the variety of programs, resources, and opportunities available to students through the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

During “Modern Languages & Cultures Week” beginning Monday, April 4, all members of the University community can attend any of several free events on the River Campus to learn more about all of the department’s language programs both on campus and abroad.

Several talks at the beginning of the week kick off the celebration. On Monday, April 4, Barbara Alvarez of the reference department of Rush Rhees Library will give a presentation on “Everyday Life in Cuba” at 3:30 p.m. in 401 Morey Hall. At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5, Pablo Alvarez of the Rare Books and Special Collections Library will discuss “Translating Leonardo (A Treatise on Painting)” in the Plutzik Room of Rush Rhees Library. Ernst-Joerg von Studnitz, the former German ambassador to Russia, will talk about “Russia’s Difficult Way Towards Democracy” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in 203 Meliora Hall. Also on Tuesday, students pursuing interdisciplinary studies related to modern languages and cultures will discuss their experiences from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Hartman Room, 401 Lattimore Hall.

On Wednesday, April 6, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Center for Study Abroad will host a videoconference from noon to 1 p.m. in the May Room in Wilson Commons with students from the Italian studies in Tuscany program. Students in the program spend a spring semester based in Arezzo, where they study history, art history, and Italian language, while taking trips to Rome, Pisa, Venice, Florence, and other locations. From one to two students may chat with returning participants from study abroad programs.

Later that day, the Japanese anime feature Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade will be screened at 7 p.m. in 1-101 Dewey Hall. Japanese food will be served at 6:30 p.m. before the start of the film, and the movie will be followed by a discussion.

Kandice Chuh, associate professor of English at the University of Maryland, will discuss “Notes on Comparative Racialization: Crossing the Lines Between Asian-American and African-American Literary Study” at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the Gamble Room in Rush Rhees Library.
