New work by 58 artists from Western New York, Southern Ontario, and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania includes pieces by two University of Rochester faculty members and are now on display in an expanded biennial exhibition at venues in the Buffalo area.
Artwork by Stephanie Ashenfelder, adjunct instructor of art, and Allen C. Topolski, associate professor of art and Studio Art coordinator, were selected for “Beyond/In Western New York 2005 Biennial Exhibition,” which is considered the largest collaborative art exhibition in the Buffalo Niagara area. The exhibits at 13 locations are free and will continue through Sunday, June 19.
Ashenfelder’s installation titled “The Prosthetics of War” is on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the Buffalo Arts Studio in the Tri-Main Center, 2495 Main St., Suite 500. Topolski is showing 15 of his works that transform common objects just past the point of recognition. They are on view from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or by appointment at the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in the EMI Building, 700 Main St., in Buffalo’s Theater District.
In 1977, the “In Western New York” series was launched. It abandoned the juried format and was the first regional invitational exhibition held at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo with participating artists selected by gallery curators. The last “In Western New York” exhibition was held in 2002.
