Getting in a college frame of mind is the intent for 26 area high school students who will sample dorm living and capitalize on their science interests at this week's Mathematics, Engineering, and Science for Hispanics (MESH) program based at the University of Rochester.
Free for selected high school juniors and seniors, the one-week career awareness program will give them a broad view of what it means to be prepared for college-or other post-high school options-and how their studies relate to future careers in science. Activities will let them connect with science in less obvious ways, too, such as learning the physics of bowling, as they participate in demonstrations and enjoy socializing with their peers.
Each day, MESH participants will travel to area campuses and corporate environments to handle science experiments and meet scientists and engineers. The program continues through July 23. Presentations also will focus on the college admissions process with information about applications, financial aid, and even a session on the SAT.
MESH is made possible by contributions from the University of Rochester, Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester City School District, Rochester Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Xerox, Roberts Wesleyan College, Paychex, and many local volunteers. Program organizers from the College of the University of Rochester include the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Science and Engineering, the College Deans’ Office, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
