A full-tuition scholarship to the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester has been awarded to Laura Delehanty, a history teacher at East High School in Rochester.
The award is given to an exceptional educator who has demonstrated a commitment to serving the community's children and shows promise and capacity as a change agent and leader in schools. Delehanty, who resides in Rochester, will pursue school building administration certification at Warner beginning this fall. She also will co-teach the Urban Teaching and Leadership (UTL) seminar courses with Sonia James-Wilson, assistant professor and UTL program director.
The scholarship is the first to be awarded as part of a new program established by the Warner School to provide scholarships and grants to educators in the Rochester area. In all, up to four full-tuition, competitive scholarships may be awarded, in addition to guaranteed tuition grants of up to $12,000 per educator.
Out of more than 60 applicants for fall 2005, 13 area educators representing 11 school districts and private schools will take advantage of the tuition grants. Applicants represent the following school districts: Albion, Greece, Hilton, Rochester, Spencerport, Webster, and West Irondequoit, in addition to BOCES, the Charter School of Science and Technology, the Harley School, and the School at Hillside Children's Center. The grants provide $1,000 per three-credit course.
The funding is available to practicing school personnel who wish to pursue a qualifying master's or non-degree professional program in teaching, school leadership, or counseling on a part-time basis, while remaining employed as an educator.
Educators employed by public, private, and parochial pre-K–12 schools in Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Orleans, and Genesee counties are eligible. Applicants must be accepted to a master's or non-degree teaching, administration, or school counseling program to receive the tuition grant.
