Sugar Cane Alley (Rue cases nègres) is the first of this semester's "Coming of Age in Diaspora" Africa Video Series. Directed by Euzhan Palcy, the 1983 film has earned many international awards. The screening is sponsored by the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies at the University of Rochester.

The French film is considered a classic in its development of the relationship between a boy and his grandmother. Life on the Afro-Caribbean island is depicted during a period when races, cultures, and colonial traditions clash.
