'Human Zoos: The Colonial Subject on Display'

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 4 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in the Gamble Room, 361 Rush Rhees Library, on the University of Rochester's River Campus

Walter Putnam, professor of French at the University of New Mexico, will discuss the historical and ideological forces that led to the display of humans in late 19th and early 20th century Europe and the United States. Situated between science and show business, human zoos reflected fragments of colonial empire at a time when scientific racism was being constructed.
