Timmons earned his bachelor's degree from Colgate University and his M.B.A. and Doctor of Business Administration from Harvard University. His doctoral dissertation, "Entrepreneurial and Leadership Development in an Inner City Ghetto and a Rural Depressed Area" in 1971 was the first use of the word "entrepreneurial" in a dissertation title.
