The University of Rochester's Symphony Orchestra will perform at the historic Smith Opera House in Geneva, N.Y., at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
The free concert will feature Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait with special guest narration by Bishop Gregory Parris of Church of Love Faith Center and performance by world renowned pianist and artist-in-residence in the University of Rochester's music department, Zora Mihailovich.
The program also includes "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius, "Symphonic Variations" by César Franck; and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris."
The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, featuring undergraduates and members of the Rochester area, present four concerts a year on campus and in various community venues. The orchestra is directed by David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities. Harman is music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and of the Penfield Symphony.
The Smith Opera House has served as the cultural center of the Geneva community for more than 100 years. Built in 1894 by philanthropist William Smith, the Richardsonian Romanesque structure, is nationally recognized by the Smithsonian and the National Register for Historic Places. "The Smith" has served the region as a movie palace, opera house, vaudeville venue, and performing arts center and has hosted famous entertainers and musicians, including George M. Cohan, Isadora Duncan, John Philip Sousa, Jay Leno, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Dave Matthews.
