The University of Rochester's Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra will perform their first concerts of the 2002-2003 season during the University's annual Meliora Weekend.

The Chamber Orchestra, an all-student group, will perform at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus as part of the music department's open house. The group, under the direction of David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities, will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, KV 466 and will feature internationally acclaimed pianist Zora Mihailovich.

Mihailovich is artist-in-residence in the Department of Music in the College. She has performed in venues such as London's Royal Festival Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall and with music greats such as Placido Domingo and Nicolai Gedda. As artist-in-residence, Mihailovich presents recitals, serves as guest lecturer, holds workshops, coaches chamber music, and appears as a soloist with various ensembles.

The University of Rochester's Symphony Orchestra, a music group currently in its 47th season, includes undergraduate and graduate students as well as talented musicians from the greater Rochester area. This group, also conducted by Harman, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in Strong Auditorium, presenting Bach/Stokowski's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BVW 565 and Rachmaninoff's Concerto for Piano No. 2 in C Minor, op. 18. This performance will also feature Mihailovich. Additionally, the Symphony Orchestra will perform Orff's Carmina Burana with the University Choir under the direction of L. Brett Scott, instructor in music and director of choral activities.

Admission to both of these performances is free. Because of the large number of visitors expected on campus for Meliora Weekend, please contact the Department of Music at (585) 275-2828 for more information.
