This summer, local high school students are invited to partake in a variety of academic camps and programs at the University of Rochester involving the study of science. Students will have the opportunity to learn as well as meet others who are interested in science. Programs still accepting applications include:

· The Summer Science Academy is a three-week program that consists of both guided and independent lab projects, discussion workshops, computer labs, seminars and field trips. The program emphasizes topics in biotechnology and molecular biology, including laboratory experiments, discussion groups, computer workshops and field trips. Applicants must currently be in grades 9 through 12, have taken at least one year of high school biology or an equivalent, and have a strong interest in science. The classes run from July 7-25 from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. The fee for the 2003 Summer Science Academy is $675. Scholarships are available. For more information, see: http://www2.envmed.rochester.edu/envmed/ehsc/outreach/sum_sci_acad/sum_sci_acad.html

· Science Explorations Camp is a one-week camp for boys and girls entering grades 7-9 in the fall. The camp involves hands-on laboratory work, lectures by scientists and talks about careers in science. Students will learn about the nervous system and the mind-body connection. Applicants must have a recommendation from a science teacher. Session 1 is held from Aug. 4-8, and session 2 from Aug. 11-15, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The fee is $225 and applications must be received by May 1. A limited number of financial aid scholarships are available. For more information, see: http://www2.envmed.rochester.edu/envmed/ehsc/outreach/sci_exp_camp/sci_exp_camp.html

· The Math, Science and Computer Camp for Girls is for girls ages 9-14. The director is Edith Kort at 377-6862. The girls use computers, take part in hands-on activities, visit laboratories on campus, and hear from guest scientists. Activities might include engineering bridges out of toothpicks, folding paper with mathematical precision into origami sculptures, or probing the number systems of other cultures. More information available at: http://www.rochester.edu:80/Warner/news/sci_camp.html

· The Rochester Scholars Summer Program is a two-week academic experience providing bright, talented, and motivated high school students the opportunity for in-depth exploration of topics in the sciences and engineering, as well as the humanities. The program also affords students the chance to interact with peers from area schools who have a wide range of interests and goals. Most importantly, it gives students time to test the "college experience" in a fun-filled, but challenging, setting. Students entering grades 9-12 are eligible. The course runs from July 21 - Aug. 1, Monday-Friday. Cost is $295 per course, $590 for both. This fee covers all course-related expenses and materials. A $25 nonrefundable deposit is required with the application. For more information, see: http://www.rochester.edu/College/OSP/hs/rs.html

· The Pre-College Experience in Physics (PREP) summer program for 9th and 10th grade high school age women in the Rochester area offers an introduction to physics through a sequence of hands-on laboratory activities with experienced instructors. Tours of University research facilities and presentations by researchers give PREP students exposure to a range of science and technology careers. Classes run from July 7 - August 1, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Applications must be in by April 1. For more information, see: http://spider.pas.rochester.edu/mainFrame/education/special/specialPREP.html

· The PARTICLE (Physicists and Rochester Teachers Inventing Classroom Experiments) Program is designed to engage high school students and teachers in forefront research that probes the basic mysteries of the structure of matter and fundamental forces of nature. Class runs from July 15-31. For more information, see: http://www.pas.rochester.edu/~pavone/particle-www/
