2009 Program Reflects on the History and Future of Catholic Schools
For the past twenty years, the Summer Institute on Catholic Education, sponsored by the University of Rochester's Warner School of Education, has presented educators not only with thoughtful discussions on the emerging trends and issues facing Catholic education, but also an environment in which to share their stories about faith-based schools. On July 9 and 10, 2009, the Summer Institute will celebrate its twentieth anniversary in Rochester, N.Y. where the program takes place each year.
This year's programming will include sessions from nationally-acclaimed Catholic school leaders around the theme of "Catholic Education: Fire Up, Fuel, and Focus." Those participating will walk away with a better understanding of the Catholic schools' rich history and new skills, knowledge, and tools for ensuring a hopeful future for the schools. Keynote presentations and breakout sessions will cover an array of topics, ranging from Catholic school culture and Church law to bullying prevention, social and emotional learning development, and strategies for bringing learning alive.
The first of the two keynote speakers, Marc Brackett, Ph.D., a research scientist in psychology and deputy director of the Health, Emotion and Behavior Laboratory at Yale University, will open the Institute on Thursday, July 9 with an address on emotional literacy. During his keynote address, "Emotional Literacy in Catholic Education — Why Does it Matter?," he will share how emotions impact student learning and performance, decision making, relationships and work performance, and how we can harness the wisdom of emotions to become effective educators.
Carol Cimino, Ed.D., will present the second keynote address, "Like a Fire in the Night," on Friday, July 10. Cimino, who is a national consultant, author, and teacher, will discuss the developments and experiences of Catholic education the past 20 years. By recognizing and capitalizing on the schools' history, she will help Catholic school leaders forge a new era in Catholic education that meets the needs of future generations.
Since its inception, the Summer Institute has attracted nearly 3,500 participants, including teachers, school administrators, youth ministers, church members, parents, and others who have been interested in Catholic education.
The 2009 Summer Institute will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 9 and from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Friday, July 10. A twentieth anniversary celebration will take place Friday following the closing liturgy.
All sessions will be held at the Holiday Inn Rochester Airport on Brooks Avenue in Rochester. Registration is $240 per person and includes materials, refreshments, and luncheons.
