Richard Glor, assistant professor of biology at the University of Rochester, will kick off the Science Cafe series of talks at the Barnes & Noble in Pittsford.
The Science Cafe talks are live events that involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone, and conducted in plain language to create a comfortable atmosphere for people without a science background. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. Topics range across all sciences, and some cafés even explore connections between science and other disciplines, such as the arts.
Glor will talk about Darwin's theory of evolution, explaining his thoughts on evolution, the common ancestry of all life, the multiplication of species, their gradual changes, and natural selection. Glor will discuss current areas of evolutionary research, including his own work learning about how new species arise. He will also talk about how biologists have discovered what they know today about evolution and what yet needs to be learned.
