WHO: ¡Soy Única! ¡Soy Latina! is open to Rochester area Latinas ages 7-18 (children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult) and their families.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, March 20, University of Rochester River Campus
WHAT: The ¡Soy Única! ¡Soy Latina! Rally aims to boost self-esteem, encourage education and career exploration, and promote healthy life choices among young Latinas.
Daisy Martinez, the host of the Food Network's Viva Daisy! and regular columnist for Every Day with Rachael Ray, will serve as this year's madrina, or godmother. Martinez will take the young Latinas through the day's activities and use her culinary skills to teach them about this year's theme, "Healthy Living, Healthy Choices."
Participants will attend workshops that encourage healthy life choices, hear about college majors and career opportunities, and learn exercise tips from Zumba instructor Felicia Garcia-Hartstein. Workshops for parents will explore the ins and outs of the college admissions process and also include a lesson on cooking tips from Daisy Martinez.
The day ends with a runway fashion show featuring trendy Quinceañera and prom dresses. The fashion show includes a raffle where one lucky teen will win a dress donated by Jane Pantoja, owner of Jane's Fashion and Bridal.
The program is sponsored by the University of Rochester, Latinas Unidas, the New York chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, and the City of Rochester.
