WHO: Representatives from State Farm and Flower City Habitat for Humanity will recognize student members of the University of Rochester campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity for their commitment to building affordable homes in the city of Rochester.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: Saturday, April 2, at a Habitat build location, 392 Jay Street in Rochester. Beginning at 9 a.m., students will be working at the build site. During a ceremony at noon, Flower City volunteers and representatives from State Farm will formally recognize the University's chapter.
WHAT: For the last 15 years, the University of Rochester's chapter has volunteered at Flower City Habitat sites, building safe, affordable homes in the inner city. In 2009, the group was able to co-sponsor a build for the first time, after raising $10,000 in funds for the construction of a house.
For their efforts, the group was selected to receive a $2,000 grant from State Farm to continue to build homes for residents in Rochester. The University's chapter is one of 29 campus chapters awarded a matching grant from State Farm, the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity's youth programs. To qualify for the grant, the chapter must raise a matching amount.
Rochester's chapter, which was founded in 1995, works in partnership with local affiliate Flower City Habitat and is sponsored by the Rochester Center for Community Leadership. Through its history, the chapter has volunteered on dozens of sites in Rochester during the academic year as well as various cities around the country as Alternative Spring Break projects.
