A free screening of the Holocaust documentary Shtetl followed a few days later by a discussion with filmmaker Marian Marzynski will be presented at the University of Rochester during the week of April 7. The award-winning film will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, in room 203 of Meliora Hall. The film's director will lead a discussion about his work at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in room 201 of Lattimore Hall.
Marzynski has been making documentary films for nearly 30 years. Reflecting his experiences as a Polish immigrant and Holocaust survivor, his work includes Return to Poland (1981) and Jewish Mother (1987), which both aired on PBS. Shtetl (1996) follows a Holocaust survivor's return from Chicago to his home in the small Polish town of Bransk. With shared stories of other returning survivors, the three-hour documentary examines Jewish-Polish relationships of the past and present. After its premier on the PBS series Frontline, the film was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cinema Du Reel in Paris in 1996, and the Silver Baton for Excellence in Radio/Television Journalism from duPont-Columbia University in 1997.
The screening and discussion on the River Campus are sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology, History, Political Science, and Religion and Classics; the Film and Media Studies Program; the Russian Studies Program; the UR Hillel Foundation; and the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies.
