An array of issues faced by school counselors will be on the agenda for the annual daylong conference for counseling professionals on Wednesday, Jan. 24. All sessions, including lunch, will be held at the Holiday Inn Airport on Brooks Avenue at the Route 390 exit.
The conference, sponsored by the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester, features opportunities for networking as well as morning and afternoon workshops on such subjects as positive youth development, aggression and behavior, and developing counselors as leaders.
"I believe that the school environment is an increasingly difficult one to live and work in, and it can be especially hard if you are in a role between teachers and administrators," said Muhyiddin A. Shakoor, keynote luncheon speaker and associate professor in counselor education at SUNY Brockport. Shakoor sees ways for counselors to be "productive and effective even in the face of exceptionally stressful, sometimes chaotic and violent circumstances."
Shakoor earned his doctorate in counselor education from Kent State University of Ohio. Since 1989, his academic, humanitarian, and research interests have been directed toward the psychological aspects of large-scale human crisis. He has spent extended time in Bosnia working with refugees.
The conference registration fee is $55 and due by Jan. 12, 2001. Discounts are available to full-time counselor education students pursuing master's degrees or post-master's degrees. The conference has the support of the New York State School Counselor Association; the Monroe County School Counselor Association; Upsilon Rho and Nu Chapters of Chi Sigma Iota; the Department of Counselor Education, SUNY Brockport; the Midwestern NYS Comprehensive School Health and Wellness Center; and the Counseling and Human Development Faculty of the Warner School.
