When the University of Rochester launched its Washington Semester program in 1968, Robert J. Sachs was the very first student to go to the nation's capital to learn first hand how this country conducts its political life.

Today, Sachs is a senior vice president at Continental Cablevision in Boston, but he is remembering his Washington Semester with a generous personal gift to help undergraduates do research about Washington politics.

Sachs has committed $10,000 to establish the Washington Studies Research Fund, which will make small research grants to undergraduates. The fund will be administered by the founder of Rochester's Washington Semester program, Richard F. Fenno, Jr., who is William Kenan Professor of Political Science and Distinguished Professor of Arts and Science.

"We certainly appreciate Robert Sachs' thoughtful gift," Prof. Fenno said. "A small grant can make a world of difference to undergraduates, helping them to defray costs of duplicating, buying materials, or traveling in connection with a project."

Those wishing more information about the grants should contact Prof. Fenno at 275-4294 or by email at rff1@troi.cc.rochester.edu
