Emil Wolf, Wilson Professor of Optical Physics and professor of optics at the University of Rochester, will give a talk with slides on the history of optics from the Middle Ages to the present at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the Robbins Library, room 416 of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
Wolf has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of optics, including the Frederic Ives Medal of the Optical Society of America, of which he was president in 1978. He is co-author, with Nobel Laureate Max Born, of Principles of Optics, now in its sixth edition, and co-author, with Leonard Mandel, of Optical Coherence and Quantum Optics. Wolf has received five honorary degrees from universities in the Netherlands, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, and Canada.
His presentation will be held in the Robbins Library, a special collection within Rush Rhees Library that offers comprehensive holdings in all aspects of Middle English literature and supplemental materials in the fields of Old English, Anglo-Norman, and French literature, medieval history, philosophy, theology, art, and manuscript studies.
