Researchers at the University of Rochester and ViaHealth are seeking area residents to participate in the Smokers' Health Study, which is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Participants will be asked about their smoking and diet behaviors, and will be contacted a few times during their 18-month enrollment period. People who want to participate must be at least 18 years of age, smoke five cigarettes or more a day, have given some thought to quitting smoking, and be able to read, write and speak English. All those enrolled will receive resources to help them stop smoking.

"We want to know more about how people think about smoking and their diet, and whether and how they decide to make health-related changes," said Dr. Geoffrey Williams, the study's principal investigator and associate professor at the University's School of Medicine and Dentistry. Williams is collaborating with University professors Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan.

Participants will be compensated for parking and lab tests required during the study. For more information, call the Smokers' Health Study at (585) 922-7670.
