Students representing various faith communities at the University of Rochester will be making and delivering 3,000 sandwiches to local food kitchens and community centers next week as part of their Faiths in Action initiative.

Over a three-day period, students will prepare peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches for about a dozen local sites, including Friendship Nursery Center, the House of Mercy, St. Joseph's House, and the Rosa Wims Family Wellness Center. Food donations for the project, dubbed PB & Jam 2001, are being provided by Genesee Valley Foodlink and Wegmans.

Originally a program sponsored by Jewish Hillel, PB & Jam is being joined by members of the Buddhist, Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Baha'i, and Hindu faiths. In addition, groups of student athletes, fraternities, and sororities as well as other clubs will take turns making and delivering sandwiches.

The students will create an assembly line from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, March 20 to 22, in the Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons on the River Campus.
