Dennis O'Brien, president emeritus of the University of Rochester, has been named one of 13 Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars for 1996-97.

Each year, a select number of distinguished scholars are chosen to make two-day visits to universities and colleges with Phi Beta Kappa chapters to encourage scholarly activities and to enrich the intellectual atmosphere of the institution. The 1997- 97 Visiting Scholars will make about 100 visits.

The Visiting Scholars meet with undergraduates informally, participate in classroom lectures and seminars, and give a major address that is open to the entire academic community.

O'Brien served as president at Rochester from 1984-95. Before that, he was president of Bucknell University from 1976- 84. At both institutions, he was also a professor of philosophy, and taught classes.

He is the author of Hegel on Reason in History, God and the New Haven Railway, What to Expect from College, and All the Essential Half-Truths About Higher Education (forthcoming).

O'Brien and his wife, Judith, now live in Middlebury, VT.
