This summer, local high school students are invited to partake in a variety of academic camps and programs at the University of Rochester involving the study of science. Students will have the opportunity to learn as well as meet others who are interested in science. Programs still accepting applications include:

The Summer Science Academy, a four-week program of both guided and independent lab projects, discussion workshops, computer labs, seminars, and field trips. The program emphasizes topics in biotechnology and molecular biology, and includes lectures by faculty members and guest speakers. Applicants should be in grades 9 through 11, and must have taken a biology class. The program runs from July 8 to 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is $650; a limited number of scholarships are available. For more information, call (585) 275-3171.

The Science Explorations Camp, a one-week camp that involves hands-on laboratory work, field trips, and problem solving. This summer's theme is "Science Mysteries." Campers will use the scientific method and their problem-solving skills to solve mysteries. They will study forensic and medical science, including topics such as the application of DNA techniques to the solving of crimes. Students must be entering grades 7 to 9 in the fall, and an application with a science teacher recommendation is required. Students may sign up for either the first session from Aug. 5 through 9 or the second session running from Aug. 12 through 16. Both sessions take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Enrollment is limited to 24 students per session. The fee is $220; a limited number of scholarships are available. For more information, call (585) 275-3171.

The Pre-College Experience in Physics (PREP) Program, a four-week program for young female high school students providing an introduction to physics and broad exposure to science. The program consists of laboratory instruction based on introductory college physics, covering areas such as classical mechanics, waves, and optics. Participants meet with researchers working in a range of scientific disciplines. Team projects, internet research, tours of research facilities, and meeting with undergraduates in research are also included. Applicants should be young women who are completing grade 9 or 10. The program runs from July 1 to 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are no sessions from July 4 through 5. There is no fee, and a commuter program is available. The Rochester Scholars Program, offered by the University's Office of Special Programs, is for students who will be entering grades 9 through 12 this fall. The two-week program offers an opportunity for motivated students to explore in depth topics in sciences, social sciences, engineering, and humanities. The application deadline is June 14. The program runs from July 22 through Aug. 2 and students can choose one of two sessions: from 9 a.m. to noon, or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is $295 per course.
