University of Rochester student Dan Wang has been named the 2012-2013 University of Rochester Student Employee of the Year. The award, given annually by the Student Employment Office, recognizes an outstanding student employee who has made valuable contributions to the department in which he or she works. Wang, who works for University Communications as a news assistant, was nominated by Larry Arbeiter, associate vice president of communications.

As a news assistant for communications, Wang's work often included weekend work to keep track of University news, and 7 a.m.-work days to prepare daily news reports. In addition to supporting staff in the office with press lists and news pitches, he also wrote press releases, news stories, and blog posts relating to University news.

In a letter nominating Wang for the award, Arbeiter wrote that Wang's insight and diligence sometimes led to national media coverage for the University. "That kind of success is highly sought by experienced professionals, and is basically unheard of by a student," said Arbeiter.

"I feel immensely lucky to have such a great job. This office is one of my favorite places on campus, and I'm glad to be able to come in and always count on the chance to interact with such friendly and supportive coworkers," said Wang. "I don't hesitate to say that this office has contributed as much to my education as my classes."

Wang, who resides in Warminster, Pa., and double majors in economics and philosophy, has worked at University Communications since May 2011. Last summer, he served as an intern for strategic planning with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and worked with the Huffington Post as an editorial intern. While at the Huffington Post, Wang wrote an article about an eminent domain scandal in New Jersey, a case which has recently been granted review by the U.S. Supreme Court. Most recently, Wang wrote an article about a Fourth Amendment violation for Reason.com.

"His work ethic is excellent, he is smart, focused, pleasant, professional, and easy to work with, and he needs less supervision than many professionals," wrote Arbeiter. "When I have sought Dan's advice it has always been thoughtful, measured, and helpful."

In celebration of Student Employee Week (April 8-14), the Student Employment Office recognized Wang, along with all of this year's nominees, at a private reception. As Employee of the Year, Wang will have the opportunity to compete at regional and state levels through the National Student Employee Association's awards program.

Other students nominated for the 2012-13 Student Employee of the Year award were Gregory Bocko '13, Amy Colorado '15, Gladys Nickerson '14, and Gala Tubera '15.
