Area high school juniors are invited to apply to a summer research program at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), home to some of the world's top research in fusion and related optics research.

Students who will complete their junior year in high school by this summer are invited to apply to the program. Up to ten students will work on LLE projects for eight weeks under the supervision of LLE researchers. In addition, the students will attend seminars in science, technology, ethics, and career orientation.

The program begins July 5 and culminates August 25 in a symposium where students will present the results of their summer work. The students will work 40 hours a week and will receive $4.25 per hour.

The goal of the program is to expose students, including women and underrepresented minorities, to research in science and technology in a real environment, says David D. Meyerhofer, associate professor of mechanical engineering and assistant to the director for academic affairs at LLE. This will be the seventh year of the program; in past years some students have even won national science awards for their work at LLE.

Applications are due at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, 250 E. River Road, Rochester, NY 14623-1299 by April 14. Applicants must submit a supporting letter from a teacher and an application form. Some applicants will be interviewed, and students will be chosen by the end of April.
