Joel Seligman has been reappointed President of the University of Rochester.
"The Board of Trustees has enthusiastically endorsed Joel's reappointment, and I share in that enthusiasm. He has done a great job," said Ed Hajim, chair of the Board of Trustees.
Presidents of the University serve indefinite terms at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees. They are reviewed periodically, usually every five years. Seligman's last review took place in 2009-10. Trustee Tom Sloan chaired the most recent reappointment committee.
"We did a thorough review," Sloan said. "We talked with trustees, University officers, and student leaders, and we surveyed the faculty. The results were overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic. People appreciate the job Joel has done in providing vision, injecting incredible energy, and in communicating openly with all the University's constituents."
Sloan said that the review committee cited the University's progress under Seligman's leadership in key areas:
- Using strategic planning to set priorities and bring focus to its efforts.
- Enhancing the quality of faculty and students.
- Strengthening the infrastructure to enable them to flourish, including the Wilmot Cancer Center, Saunders Research Building, Goergen Hall, Eastman Theatre renovation and expansion, LeChase Hall, Rettner Hall, and O'Brien Hall.
- Working with Medical Center leadership to address the challenges posed by the changes in the health care system.
- Creating a strong Advancement operation and fundraising campaign.
- Enhancing the University's reputation.
- Strengthening its fiscal management.
- Focusing on creating a more diverse and inclusive community.
- Greatly enhancing relationships with the city and neighbors, including facilitating the developments at Brooks Crossing and College Town.
"This is a truly excellent record of accomplishment," Hajim said. "I look forward to working with Joel as we tackle the challenges in the days ahead."
In response to the Board's action, Seligman said, "I am deeply gratified by the Board's vote for my reappointment. I look forward to working further with the Board, our leadership, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to build an ever better University of Rochester in the years to come."
