The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures of the University of Rochester will be sharing a taste of Japanese food and culture beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Gamble Room in Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus.
The "Festival of Food and Film" will start with a reception in which guests will be invited to savor the cuisine of Japan. The event will continue with the showing of the 1985 film Tampopo at 7 p.m.
The Japanese comedy, directed by Juzo Itami, pays homage to the joys of food through the story of a roguish trucker named Goro and his quest to set up the perfect ramen noodle restaurant. Woven into this main story are a number of vignettes and subplots about the love of food, ranging from a culinary kooky gangster who mixes hot sex with food to an old lady terrorizing a shopkeeper by compulsively squeeze-testing his wares. This film marked a resurgence in interest in contemporary Japanese cinema in the United States and Europe.
