Runners can be "Early Birds" and sign up now for the fourth annual
Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21. The 5K walk/run celebrates
the suffragist's efforts to win women equal rights and opportunities, including
her fight to win women admission to the University of Rochester.
Proceeds from the race benefit ongoing educational programs at the Susan B. Anthony
Center for Women's Leadership at the University and the Susan B. Anthony House.
The race starts at 10 a.m. at the Anthony House, 17 Madison St., and proceeds
east on West Main Street to Ford Street, down Ford Street to Wilson Boulevard,
and down Wilson Boulevard to the finish line on the University's River Campus.
Prizes will be awarded to the first man and woman to cross the finish line, the
top men and women by age groups, the fastest team, and the participant who collects
the most pledges. All race participants will receive a complimentary canvas bag.
There also will be a vendor expo after the race.
The event also includes an on-campus kids' race for children 12 and under starting
at 11 a.m., with all participants in the "Fun Run" receiving balloons
and treats.
Participants can register online at www.rochester.edu/SBA/2003Race/race03.htm.
Early Bird registration, good through Sept. 17, is $15. The fee after Sept. 17
is $18. For more information or to receive a registration form by mail, call (585)
275-8799.
Race coordinators are the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership, the Susan B.
Anthony House, and the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys. Community
sponsors includes News 10NBC, WARM 101.3, and Wegmans.
The Anthony Legacy Race was inspired by Susan B. Anthony's "deadline dash"
to ensure women's admission to the University of Rochester. Anthony raised the
final monies needed for the co-education campaign fund and rushed to present the
funds to the trustees on Sept. 8, 1900, in time for women to enroll in classes
that fall.
