Rush Rhees Library, the keystone of University of Rochester libraries, is now open until 3 a.m. most of the week to accommodate students who are staying up later and later to study.
"The change in hours is an ongoing attempt to respond to what we hear about students' lifestyles while on campus," says Ronald F. Dow, Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Dean of River Campus Libraries. "What we realized was that students were studying later at night, a change partially due to students' longer work days and later classes and labs."
Even without a formal announcement in September, students caught on quickly. "I think it is fabulous that Rush Rhees is open until 3 a.m.," says junior Katherine Kaminski. "Each night last year, I was still in the middle of studying when the library closed (at 1 a.m.), but this gives me a little extra time to finish before going back to my room."
Many students are taking advantage of the additional time to read, write and research information-especially as exams and final papers come due.
The new hours for Rush Rhees Library, which is named for the University's third president, are 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. Monday to Thursday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 3 a.m. Sunday.
