Immunizations for meningococcal meningitis and influenza will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Friel Lounge of the Susan B. Anthony Residence Halls on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The outreach program is open to University of Rochester students, faculty, staff, and others in the University community. No appointments are necessary.

The immunization program is sponsored by University Health Service with VACCESSHealth, a company that specializes in direct access immunization programs. The fees are $85 for the meningitis vaccine and $20 for the flu shot. Students can charge the cost to their tuition bill. Payment also can be made by credit card.

UHS is offering this meningitis immunization outreach program because of an increase in the number of cases of meningitis on college campuses. The bacterial infection, which causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, is the second most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States, responsible for 3,000 to 4,000 cases each year.

For the flu vaccine, the National Center for Infectious Diseases recommends that those who want to lower their chances of getting the flu get a flu shot. People who provide essential community services as well as students or others in institutional settings are encouraged to get a shot.
