Message from President Seligman on Bordeaux Civil Suit

“The University has learned that a civil lawsuit has been filed by the family of the late Jeffrey Bordeaux Jr., a University junior who in January 2011 was stabbed during a fight on campus and subsequently died from his injuries. Fellow classmate Daren Venable was charged in the stabbing, but was found by a judge to be not guilty by reason of self-defense. This was a terrible and painful tragedy that forever altered the lives of the Bordeaux and Venable families. As a University, we must always keep in our thoughts these two Rochester students, while also being mindful of how the University moves forward for the better following an incident such as this. In the weeks following Jan. 15, 2011, the University conducted a thorough internal review of its systems and policies, with a final report concluding that the procedures, response, and policies at the time of the event were effective and appropriate. Tragedies of this nature also provide clear opportunities for the institution to build upon current practices in a continuous effort to create an even safer community for students, faculty, and staff. The University is among three defendants named in the Bordeaux family civil suit, along with Delta Upsilon fraternity, and Daren Venable. University counsel will carefully review this lawsuit.”
