He will use a flipped classroom approach to put some of the lecture material on videos that students can watch ahead of time.\u00a0 That will free up classroom time for group discussion and problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>Fu will engage students in producing video-based tutorials to serve as teaching and training resources. Adam Fenster) <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/research\/researchconnections\/april-22-2016.html\"><strong>Read more about Professor Vamivakas&#8217;s work in quantum optics\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NSF CAREER awards focus primarily on fundamental research that will expand our base of knowledge, but may not result in immediate applications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is definitely basic research<strong>,\u201d <\/strong>Vamivakas says of his project &lt;em&gt;Quantum Photonics with Quantum Dots in van der Waals Heterostructures.&lt;\/em&gt; \u201cThere&#8217;s not going to be a widget coming out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However he is excited about the potential applications his research points toward.<\/p>\n<p>If the photon-emitting nanostructures he is working with could be substituted in place of lasers in integrated photonic chips, for example, &#8220;You could do things like computing and information processing that would be much faster. Adam Fenster)<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/research\/researchconnections\/april-15-2016.html\"><strong>Read more about Professor Doug Kelley&#8217;s work on liquid batteries<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Controlling the ability of materials to absorb light or transport electronic charge on an ultrafast timescale, Franco adds, \u201cwill open the way to a variety of technological applications.
