{"id":168122,"date":"2016-06-16T15:44:26","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T19:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=168122"},"modified":"2016-10-13T14:25:49","modified_gmt":"2016-10-13T18:25:49","slug":"conversing-computer-may-fight-fear-public-speaking-168122","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/conversing-computer-may-fight-fear-public-speaking-168122\/","title":{"rendered":"Conversing with computer may fight fear of public speaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can a computer make you a better public speaker?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Rochester Human Computer Interaction group created a project that aims to do just that.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.machinteraction.com\/rocspeak\/\">RocSpeak<\/a><\/strong> is a platform with the goal of helping people become better speakers by analyzing the words they use, the loudness and pitch of their voice, their body language, and when and how often they smile. Users record their speech using their computer&#8217;s microphone and camera and then RocSpeak provides automated feedback intended to improve communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Working with\u00a0Ehsan Hoque, assistant professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering, the project is currently being led by several students including Ru Zhao \u201917, Vivian Li \u201918, Bilal Moiz \u201916, Zoe Tiet \u201917, and\u00a0 Tergel Purevdorj &#8217;16.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cs.rochester.edu\/hci\/index.php\"><strong>Learn more about the Human Computer Interaction\u00a0group<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ugresearch\/\"><strong>Learn more about undergraduate student research opportunities<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Microsoft recently featured ROCSpeak\u2014and the research behind it\u2014on its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/msr_er\/2016\/06\/15\/cloud-computing-changes-the-way-we-practice-public-speaking\/\">research blog<\/a><\/strong>. The video features Hoque and his student research assistants discussing the data collection process and the impact of ROCspeak on its users.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VFcOpSTwncA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Hoque and his team have also developed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wearable-technology-can-help-with-public-speaking-95552\/\">\u201csmart glasses\u201d that provide speakers with real-time, visual feedback on their performance<\/a><\/strong>.
