{"id":190442,"date":"2016-10-18T11:58:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T15:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=190442"},"modified":"2016-10-21T13:29:09","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T17:29:09","slug":"take-it-easy-a-celebration-of-country-rock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/take-it-easy-a-celebration-of-country-rock\/","title":{"rendered":"Take it easy: a celebration of country rock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe idea of blending together country music\u2014usually associated with Nashville, southern life, southern politics and culture\u2014blending that together with rock and roll seemed like the craziest thing in the world,\u201d says John Covach.\u00a0 Celebrating a style of music that dominated the 1970s, the University of Rochester\u2019s Institute for Popular Music features an evening of country rock as part of its &#8220;In Performance&#8221; concert series on Saturday, October 22.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R48LgHpxdOM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Formed during tumultuous time in our nation\u2019s history\u2014a fusion of country and rock and roll\u2014was the new style of Americana as it was introduced to a new generation. \u201cBlending country music with rock and roll, at the end of the 1960s, was a bold thing to do because, culturally at that time period in country music\u2014 it was the music of the relatively conservative. Those who had no regard for hippies or hippie music and their rock and roll,\u201d says Covach, director of both the University\u2019s Institute for Popular Music (IPM) and Institute for Performing Arts. \u201cSo when a rock band like The Byrds went to Nashville to record \u201cSweetheart of the Rodeo\u201d in 1968, they were really doing something that nobody had done before, the idea of blending together country music and country musicians with rock musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBob Dylan does \u201cNashville Skyline\u201d in 1969. Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young use a fair amount of country influences from 1969, so we see a very song oriented music and rich in vocals. There are a lot of country touches\u2014you\u2019ll find the banjo popping up, and the steel guitar. Performed live by the League of Extraordinary Uncles, along with faculty members and students of the Department of Music, the concert will feature music by such artists as the Eagles, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Admission is free.
