{"id":213722,"date":"2017-02-12T11:33:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-12T16:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=213722"},"modified":"2017-02-21T15:11:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-21T20:11:44","slug":"online-dating-brings-matches-but-it-isnt-scientific-213722","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/online-dating-brings-matches-but-it-isnt-scientific-213722\/","title":{"rendered":"Online dating brings matches, but it isn&#8217;t scientific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Psychologist Harry Reis investigated the phenomenon of online dating in 2012, which had then\u00a0surpassed in popularity all forms of matchmaking in the United States other than meeting through friends.<\/p>\n<p>Reis, who holds the title of Dean&#8217;s Professor in the Department of Psychology, and his team found that online dating has lost the stigma once attached to personal ads, and it provides convenient access to potential partners. And corresponding by computer for weeks or months before meeting face to face has been shown to create unrealistic expectations, he says.<\/p>\n<p>And men and women behave differently online, with men looking at more profiles than women and being more likely to initiate contact.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also cautioned that online sites can encourage search for a \u201csoulmate,\u201d convincing would-be daters that a partnership is \u201cmeant to be.\u201d Such people are especially likely to bail on a relationship when problems arise and to become vengeful in response to partner aggression
