{"id":215212,"date":"2017-02-03T15:38:39","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T20:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=215212"},"modified":"2021-01-12T11:25:45","modified_gmt":"2021-01-12T16:25:45","slug":"douglass-not-a-monument-but-a-mindset-215212","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/douglass-not-a-monument-but-a-mindset-215212\/","title":{"rendered":"Douglass: \u2018Not a monument, but a mind-set\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Rashad Moore \u201917 asks some African-American campus leaders: What does Frederick Douglass mean to us today? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>With Black History Month upon us, we reflect on the African-American men and women who have helped make this country what it is today\u2014from Barack Obama, to Rosa Parks, W.E.B Dubois, Fredrick Douglass, and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these individuals is peerless when it comes to their accomplishments; however, they would be remiss if they were to say they could have accomplished what they did without the great black men and women who came before them. The adage \u201cwe stand on the shoulders of giants\u201d is true for every member of the black community.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s especially true here on the University of Rochester campus, where Douglass\u2019s legacy is a living presence.<\/p>\n<p>The University is home to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/aas\/\">Frederick Douglass Institute of African and African-American Studies<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a 30-plus-year-old intellectual hub for teaching, research, and public events. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/reinvented-douglass-new-hub-student-life-183652\/\"><strong>Frederick Douglass Commons<\/strong>,<\/a> named in 1967 and renovated in 2016, is home to a dining center as well as multiple University organizations promoting intercultural knowledge and diversity. And the University&#8217;s Rare Books and Special Collections is home to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rbscp.lib.rochester.edu\/2494\">Frederick Douglass Project,<\/a><\/strong> and online and physical collection of his writings from his time in Rochester.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/timeline3\/latest\/embed\/index.html?source=1DC01n-jTS-UxVz3zUcd5Kqi0KPLiX64mNSjButGhpRg&amp;font=Default&amp;lang=en&amp;initial_zoom=2&amp;height=650\" width=\"100%\" height=\"650\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Douglass spent 25 years in Rochester. Over his lifetime, he was an abolitionist leader, pastor, writer, bank president, vice presidential nominee, and a United States Marshal for the District of Columbia. But before he played any of those prominent roles, he was nothing more than the property of Thomas Auld. He was a slave.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing epitomizes Douglass more than hard work, determination, and innovation. As a slave, he started learning how to read and write by giving bread to poor white boys in exchange for reading lessons. DLH was founded in 2012 by a group of students \u201cto create an engaged intellectual community where students of diverse backgrounds can come together in a supportive environment to nurture their leadership skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DLH vice president <strong>Aleem Griffiths<\/strong> \u201918, a digital studies major from Bronx, New York, says, \u201cTwo of Fredrick Douglass\u2019s virtues that inspire me as a student are his hard work and determination. When I think of Douglass and my ancestors, I think about how they fought harder battles than I have, which pushes me to work harder. DLH resident <strong>Edwin Aguila<\/strong> \u201917, who designed his own major\u2014advocacy through art forms in America\u2014is an example. \u201cLast year we went to the Boys and Girls Club [of Rochester] and put on a program we created on the theme, what is my identity and where do I come from,\u201d says the senior from Brooklyn, New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amber Hudson<\/strong> \u201918, and English major from Washington, D.C., cites as inspiration Douglass\u2019s courage, resilience, and strength\u2014qualities that she feels were necessary not only to Douglass\u2019s success, but to the success of all African Americans, herself included. She\u2019s focused on \u201cgiving back to the community in a way that betters the community\u201d through her leadership roles in multiple organizations. (University photo \/ Rashad Moore)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Stephaun Ward<\/strong> \u201918, a mechanical engineering major from Brooklyn and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, uses his platform there to help underprivileged students, regardless of race. Ward assists local youths as part of the fraternity\u2019s \u201cGo-to-High-School, Go-to-College\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Douglass is not a monument, but a mind-set. Says Hudson, \u201cBy teaching about his legacy, by connecting it to everything we do today, and by continuing to fight for what he fought so hard for\u2014that is how we honor our ancestors.
