\nThat Poor Girl and How He Killed Her<\/em><\/a><\/strong>
\na new play by emerging playwright\u00a0Jen Silverman<\/em>Now playing at Todd Theatre:

With spring on the horizon, the International Theatre Program at the University of Rochester presents Jen Silverman\u2019s That Poor Girl and How He Killed Her<\/em>\u2014a dark comedy on the social lives of millennials.<\/p>\n

New York City-based guest director Knud Adams says the play \u201chas a wealth of credible, sympathetic characters,\u201d even as it\u2019s \u201csend-up of the most vain, self-indulgent, social-anxious aspects of youth culture today.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what do the cast members\u2014who are the same age as the characters in the play\u2014think? They reflect on the performance with the eyes of actors, but also as millennials.<\/p>\n

Tori Powers \u201918, who plays the character Alyssa, says there\u2019s more to the characters\u2019 lives than meets the eye. \u201cAll the characters in the play have their own story that is more than what is being shown on stage,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Powers identified with some aspects of her character, but found others presented more of a challenge. \u201cI think being close in age to the character, and having the play set in the same time, helped me connect with Alyssa,\u201d she says. \u201cYet, at the same time, I had to grow a backbone to play Alyssa. She is this pretty, rich girl who’s friends with the \u2018popular\u2019 people, and also the not-so-\u2018popular\u2019 people.\u201d Powers notes that Alyssa attends an Ivy League college\u2014something that makes Alyssa \u201cthis character with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yumeng Liu \u201918, who plays Bianca, feels the same kind of dichotomy. \u201cBianca is a person who really wants to be popular and cool. And in her opinion, joining this group led by Mackenzie is the key,\u201d says Liu. \u201cBeing [a] different [person] can make me judge my character sometimes, but I tried to love her and understand Bianca, which can help a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward Sambrano \u201917, who plays Connor, sees the play in a very similar light as the playwright, who is a millennial herself. \u201cThat Poor Girl<\/em> is the story of a dangerously superficial and sensationalist culture\u2014a reflection on the modern attitudes affecting groups of people our age,\u201d he says. \u201cJen Silverman really makes you reflect, especially as a young adult, on these attitudes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sambrano \u201917 credits guest director Knud Adams for helping him improve his acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a first-time actor, I found it especially difficult to adopt the perspective of my character,\u201d he says. \u201cKnud Adams has made the process much easier by always pushing us to discover and explore the intentions of our characters\u2019 actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nearly everyone commented on the challenge of performing on a raked stage\u2014a design from early modern English theater in which the stage slopes upward, away from the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stage took some getting used to, and it definitely took some practice to perfect some of the more physical scenes on this stage\u201d says Tomas Waz \u201920, who plays Jordan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was scary at first,\u201d says Liu. \u201cI reached the upper half of the stage\u00a0and realized I was crawling on all fours because I was scared to stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fear didn\u2019t last, however. \u201cAfter a while, it\u2019s really fun being up there,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
