Anthony Giardina<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE:<\/b>\u00a07:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester River Campus.<\/p>\n

WHAT:<\/b>\u00a0Anthony Giardina, an author and playwright, presents the Neilly Lecture, “The Novelist and the Historical Imagination.” The talk focuses on the challenges that novelists face when researching the Civil War for fictional purposes.<\/p>\n

Giardina has held numerous teaching positions, at Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Colorado College, the University of Rochester, and in the MFA program at the University of Massachusetts. He is the author of\u00a0Men with Debts<\/i>\u00a0(Random House, 1986),\u00a0A Boy’s Pretensions<\/i>\u00a0(Simon and Schuster, 1968),\u00a0Recent History<\/i>\u00a0(Random House, 2001),\u00a0White Guys<\/i>\u00a0(Picador, 2006), and\u00a0Norumbega Park<\/i>\u00a0(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012), as well as the collection\u00a0The Country of Marriage<\/i>\u00a0(Random House, 1997). His plays have been produced in New York at Playwrights Horizons and the Manhattan Theater Club, and regionally at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., Seattle Rep, Yale Rep, the Long Wharf in New Haven, and the Cleveland Playhouse.<\/p>\n

Giardina’s talk is part of the yearlong Neilly Series, which is supported by the Andrew H. Neilly and Janet Dayton Neilly Endowment, and the River Campus Libraries.<\/p>\n
