It\u2019s not necessary to have a physics student on hand when assembling a digital practice carillon\u2014straight out of the box\u2014but it doesn\u2019t hurt.<\/p>\n
Alex Johnson \u201919, a physics and math major at the University of Rochester, recently led a team of his fellow classmates in putting together the College music department\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> new practice instrument.<\/p>\n The \u201creal\u201d carillon\u2014the historic Hopeman Memorial Carillon<\/a><\/strong>, a musical instrument of 50 hand-cast bronze bells\u2014is housed in the tower of Rush Rhees Library. Its chimes, every quarter hour, are familiar sounds across the University community, as are regular carillon concerts, performed by students.<\/p>\n
