Seniors in the Digital Media Studies program took center stage in Rettner Hall earlier this month to present the culmination of a year-long capstone project. A celebration and exhibition hybrid, the ceremony provided the opportunity for the seniors to explain their work, and mingle with their professors and fellow students one final time.<\/p>\n

Michael Jarvis, an associate professor of history and the director of the Digital Media Studies Program<\/a><\/strong>, oversaw the students, who worked in teams, and joined them for the duration of the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of these capstone projects were completed, had successful launches, and will live on after their creators graduate,\u201d he said, adding that the students \u201cwere wonderfully engaged, focused, and worked well together\u2014valuable achievements that will be much in demand in their future digital media workplaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a brief description of each of the projects:<\/p>\n

Emergence<\/strong>:
\nTeam: Anna Lenhert, Molly Nemer, Amy Scarfelli, Lotte Skutch, and Tess Stone<\/em>
\nDesigned as a re-imagination of a Finnish creation story, Emergence<\/em> is a digital art installation combining video, animation, original sound and music, motion detection, and complex multi-surface projection.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SounD CHK<\/strong>:
\nTeam: Christian Cieri, Ruairi Conway, Marjorie Cuerdo, and Nathan Raymond<\/em>
\nA hybrid experiment in fusing traditional print and smartphone digital media, SoundChK <\/em>immerses users and readers in original local music coming from the Rochester community.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

URAbroad<\/strong>:
\nTeam: Joy Bian, Yoonsie Kim, Courtney Kuhn, Yichen Lu, and Zoe Tiet<\/em>
\nA social media app that connects University of Rochester students dispersed around the globe, URabroad<\/em> is designed to streamline conversation between former, current, and future abroad students.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Matter of Refuge<\/strong>:
\nTeam: Carlos Richer and Mingjian Zhang<\/em>
\nA visually impressive video game modification in a fictitious, post-apocalyptic world, A Matter of Refuge <\/em>draws on \u201ccognitive empathy\u201d to encourage players to appreciate the struggles and hardships of refugees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
