Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women\u2019s Studies<\/a><\/strong>, tells the story of Madame Sofia Svechina, a Russian \u00e9migr\u00e9 who ran one of the most popular salons in early 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century Paris. A recent convert to Roman Catholicism, Svechina gave her salon a religious character. Bakhmetyeva\u2019s book examines liberal Catholicism, religious conversion, nationalism, and the role of the European salon.<\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-253212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-summer-new-reads-rothenberg.jpg\" alt=\"book cover for THE ENIGMA OF PRESIDENTIAL POWER\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>The Enigma of Presidential Power: Parties, Policies, and Strategic Uses of Unilateral Action <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By Fang-Yi Chiou and Lawrence Rothenberg<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge University Press, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Rothenberg, the Corrigan-Minehan Professor of Political Science and the director of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallis.rochester.edu\/\">W. Allen Wallis Institute of Political Economy,<\/a><\/strong> and Chiou, a researcher at Academia Sinica, the national academy of Taiwan, examine presidents\u2019 reliance on unilateral actions in the face of gridlock. They argue that presidents contemplating the use of executive orders are often constrained by concerns about challenging the legislature and the courts. Most notably, the ability of Congress to employ extrastatutory means\u2014efforts by legislators and their parties that don\u2019t require passing a law\u2014limits how presidents use their powers.<\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-253222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-summer-new-reads-fordham.jpg\" alt=\"book cover for DOWNED BY FRIENDLY FIRE\" width=\"200\" height=\"309\" \/>Downed by Friendly Fire: Black Girls, White Girls, and Suburban Schooling<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By Signithia Fordham<\/p>\n<p>University of Minnesota Press, 2016<\/p>\n<p>For two and a half years, Fordham, an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ANT\/index.php\">associate professor of anthropology<\/a><\/strong>, studied female-specific bullying, competition, and aggression at a predominantly white suburban high school in upstate New York. Her objective was \u201cto excavate, to resuscitate, and to rehabilitate the meaning of violence, with the major focus being rehabilitation.\u201d Fordham examines particularly verbal violence and pays special attention to female students who interact across racial lines as \u201cfrenemies,\u201d in relationships where boundaries between the categories of friend and enemy dissolve.<\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-253232 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-summer-new-reads-geba.jpg\" alt=\"book cover for INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORY OF WAVE MAPS AND RELATED GEOMETRIC PROBLEMS\" width=\"200\" height=\"294\" \/>An Introduction to the Theory of Wave Maps and Related Geometric Problems<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By Dan-Andrei Geba and Manoussos Grillakis<\/p>\n<p>World Scientific Publishing Company, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Wave maps\u2014mathematical objects that model interactions between subatomic particles in nuclear physics\u2014are among the most challenging nonlinear hyperbolic systems in mathematics. Geba, an a<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mth\/\">ssociate professor of mathematics,<\/a><\/strong> and Grillakis, a professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, offer an introduction for advanced graduate students and professional mathematicians and physicists. The book presents an up-to-date overview of the wave maps system and recent developments of the theory.<\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-253242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-summer-new-reads-rao.jpg\" alt=\"book cover for STATISTICAL METHODOLOGIES WITH MEDICAL APPLICATIONS\" width=\"200\" height=\"302\" \/>Statistical Methodologies with Medical Applications<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By S.R.S. Rao Poduri<\/p>\n<p>Wiley, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Poduri, a professor of mathematics and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/stt\/index.html\">director of the statistics program<\/a><\/strong>, presents statistical methods as applied to the medical field. Topics include immunization, obesity, diet, and the harmful effects of smoking and air pollution. Designed for graduate students in statistics and biostatistics, the book also offers exercises and solutions constructed from practical situations, the research findings of medical journals, and summary reports of the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-253252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-summer-new-reads-deci-ryan.jpg\" alt=\"book cover for SELF-DETERMINATION THEORY\" width=\"200\" height=\"285\" \/>Self-Determination Theory: Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development, and Wellness<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By Richard Ryan and Edward Deci<\/p>\n<p>Guilford Press, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, a professor of clinical and social sciences in psychology, and Deci, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowan Professor in the Social Sciences and a professor of psychology, are the cofounders of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/selfdeterminationtheory.org\/\">self-determination theory<\/a><\/strong>, an internationally recognized and researched theory of motivation and wellness. The theory addresses how people\u2019s basic psychological needs\u2014autonomy, competence, and relatedness\u2014affect their development, productivity, and happiness.
