There\u2019s no better time than summer\u2014away from coursework and distractions of the school year\u2014to take a deep dive into research.<\/p>\n<p>The University is home to a robust summer research community that includes Rochester students as well as others from universities across the country who have come here to take advantage of the resources of a tier-one research university that places a high priority on research opportunities for undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the researchers and their projects:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><p><strong>Meghan Patrick \u201918<\/strong> is studying the flow of fluids through liquid metal batteries that could power an entire city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jake Altabef<\/strong>, a rising junior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and <strong>Graham Palmer,<\/strong> a rising senior at University of Michigan, are applying computational tools to a classic track from jazz great Miles Davis\u2014in all its many, re-mastered formats. Their aim is to better understand the evolving relationship between record companies and consumers as new recording technologies emerge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winston Scott \u201919<\/strong> is learning how to explore what happens when students of color first become aware of race and discrimination\u2014and whether that motivates or deters them from pursuing higher education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magdalena Granados \u201919<\/strong> is running experiments that may help surgeons more precisely pinpoint critical brain functions before removing tumors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joy Nicholas \u201919<\/strong> is analyzing to what extent race and ethnicity are factors in whether mothers follow physician-recommended guidelines for infant feeding.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"side-right\" style=\"font-size: 85%;\">\n<h3><strong>By the numbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Undergraduates participating in a sampling of summer research opportunities available through the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: .75em;\">\n<li>31 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pas.rochester.edu\/\">Physics, Optics and Astronomy<\/a><\/strong> student-researchers; 15 from other universities<\/li>\n<li>30 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/chm\/\">Department of Chemistry <\/a><\/strong>student-researchers; 10 of them from other universities.<\/li>\n<li>22 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/kearnscenter\/undergraduate\/xerox-fellows\/index.html\">Xerox Engineering Research Fellows<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>15 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/kearnscenter\/undergraduate\/mcnair.html\">McNair Scholars<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>12 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/kearnscenter\/undergraduate\/reu\/index.html,\">Advancing Human Health REU<\/a>;<\/strong> \u00a07 from other universities<\/li>\n<li>12 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/undergraduate\/reu.html\">Music, Media and Minds REU;<\/a><\/strong>\u00a09 from other universities<\/li>\n<li>9 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.che.rochester.edu\/undergraduate\/opportunities.html\">Eisenberg Summer Interns<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Department of Chemical Engineering)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Many other students are doing research funded by faculty members\u2019 grants and other sources.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rochester is particularly well equipped to deliver research opportunities across multiple disciplines. For example, two new federally funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) this summer focus on biomedicine and on the computational study of music. They take full advantage of the faculty and resources of the University\u2019s new <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/\">Goergen Institute for Data Science<\/a><\/strong>, its world-renowned <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/esm.rochester.edu\/\">Eastman School of Music<\/a><\/strong>, and the close proximity of its top-ranked <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/urmc.rochester.edu\/\">Medical Center<\/a><\/strong> to the River Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had classes with professors all through our education who have been telling us about their research, and we know they\u2019re doing all these incredible projects, and yet it was just totally under our radar,\u201d says Patrick, a rising senior in mechanical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now we\u2019re involved in this whole other world that this university is so well known for.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Diving deep into the research experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A summer research experience is an opportunity for students to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Develop problem-solving skills.<\/strong> Unlike solving a classroom problem, where the answer is known, research is \u201cthe process of creating new knowledge, of finding solutions where none are known,\u201d says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThat\u2019s a very different skill from what you get in the classroom,\u201d but one that is critical to almost any career path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decide if research is something they really want to pursue.<\/strong> For many of the students, working in a lab full time can be an eye-opening experience. \u201cYou can spend a lot of hours trying to figure things out,\u201d says Graham, a visiting computer science student from the University of Michigan. \u201cAfter working eight hours some days you feel like you haven\u2019t accomplished much and you begin to wonder if you\u2019re being productive. On the other hand, you are able to decide your own path.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get a head start on applying for graduate school, and start honing the research skills they\u2019ll need when they get there. <\/strong>Many of the students, for example, are benefiting from Graduate Record Exam prep courses offered by the University\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/kearnscenter\/\">Kearns Center<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An important component of undergraduate summer research is the opportunity to interest first-generation, minority, and female students in pursuing careers in fields where they have been traditionally underrepresented.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen of the students doing research this summer are McNair Scholars, participating in a two-year Kearns Center program that helps prepare low-income, first generation, and underrepresented minority undergraduates for graduate school. The hope is that they will go on to careers in research and teaching at the university level. She assigned the students to work on a device that can automatically direct the probe that is used for the breast exams in a \u201cfaster, more repeatable way\u201d than if the probe was held by hand.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, she asked the students to program a combination of translational stages that serve as the probe\u2019s x- and y-axes, then integrate the two stages with the rest of the device.<\/p>\n<p>Forti and Curtis had to familiarize themselves with Labview\u2014a program language neither had worked with before.<\/p>\n<p>They pulled it off\u2014with two weeks to spare. That left just enough time to do the first of many testings they had hoped to do. \u201cBut it was cool to see a project that we spent so many hours working on actually coming together,\u201d Forti says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did a remarkable job,\u201d says Choe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-258492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/summer-research-posters-overview-1.jpg\" alt=\"McNair Scholars, Xerox Engineering Research Fellows, and students in the Advancing Human Health and the Music, Media and Minds REU programs will showcase their projects in oral presentations and a poster session on Friday, July 28 at the Feldman Ballroom in Douglass Commons.
