They come from 105 nations and 42 states, and they all have a story. Here are six of them.<\/h3>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"xrTlCrLhs3o\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Jason Katzner<\/h2>\n<p><em>Brooklyn, New York<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was part of a live-action role playing club back home,\u201d says Jason Katzner. \u201cIn Central Park, we would dress up as medieval fantasy swords and sorcery characters and go on quests and fight each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d like to start a similar club at Rochester.<\/p>\n<p>Katzner is enrolled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/professional\/grade\/\">GRADE program<\/a>, a partnership between College Admissions and the Warner School, which offers students interested in K\u201312 education a scholarship and a five-year path to a bachelor\u2019s degree from the College and a master\u2019s degree from Warner.<\/p>\n<p>Katzner, who hopes to become a high school computer science teacher, grew up attending tech camps, founded a computer science club in high school, and volunteered with an international non-profit that teaches children how to design and modify board games.<\/p>\n<p>He heard about Rochester from a college adviser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I looked at the curriculum, I fell in love,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to meeting people from all walks of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"f0OSrqfLy44\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Abi Liebhart<\/h2>\n<p><em>Freeport, Long Island, New York<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m awake, I can dream just as well as when I\u2019m asleep,\u201d says Abi Liebhart. \u201cI visualize how I\u2019d like things to be and create scenarios in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although she enjoys activities from paddle boarding to reading, nothing excites Liebhart more than art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to paint, draw, and sculpt,\u201d she says. \u201cMy specialty is people, especially faces. I try new things to create anything that pushes the boundary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/handler-scholarship\/\">Handler Scholar<\/a>, she plans to explore both studio art and digital media studies\u2014and to try out for one of the student a capella groups. When she leaves here in four years, she says she hopes to accomplish three goals:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo provide for my family, to feel successful, and to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"NH1GJPHQTtM\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Michael Lin<\/h2>\n<p><em>Queens, New York<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michael Lin is a published poet. \u201cI love to be creative,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Lin\u2019s parents moved from China to Queens two months before he was born. His father died when he was in sixth grade, and he has \u00a0lived with his mother, sister, and grandmother. He says being a <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/handler-scholarship\/\">Handler Scholar<\/a> has made a huge impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny burden I can take off my mom is a plus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lin, who is thinking of pursuing majors in both English and business, ran track in high school, and is also interested in rowing and squash. Basically, though, he\u2019s just eager to get started with college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friends have been telling me they\u2019re worried or fearful, but I\u2019m ready to dive in,\u201d he says. \u201cI want to take every advantage offered to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"3WgpLtf5jvU\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Coline Reinhardt<\/h2>\n<p><em>Coopersburg, Pennsylvania<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the sound of motors,\u201d says Coline Reinhardt. \u201cEvery time I hear a V12 coming, I have to turn around to see what car it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shares her passion for cars with her father. He recently bought her a 2008 Ford Mustang, which she will restore.<\/p>\n<p>Reinhardt is from France, but moved last year outside of Allentown, where her father is overseeing the construction of a food factory. Looking to complete her international baccalaureate degree, she found the French-American School of New York in Larchmont and lived with a host family.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to continue her education in the United States, and her high school counselor said Rochester would be a good fit. Reinhardt, who\u2019s interested in mechanical engineering, plans to join the Society of Women Engineers, the Baja SAE club, and maybe a few more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHorse riding, soccer, ballet dance, hip-hop, volleyball, acting, boxing . . . it will be tough to choose,\u201d she says. \u201cBeing able to join so many clubs just doesn\u2019t exist in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"AvwvaP17S_I\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Remiah Sundine<\/h2>\n<p><em>North Chili, New York<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In high school, Remiah Sundine started a \u201cyodeling and goats club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny and random and attracts people\u2019s attention,\u201d she explains. \u201cThe purpose was to create a safe environment after school where students could come if they didn\u2019t want to go home yet. I want to start one here, too. We can have cookies, look at yodeling videos and look at goats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sundine, who grew up in Minnesota, is named after her father, Jeremiah, who died when she was 2. When she was 16, her mother died, sending her and her four younger siblings to the Rochester area to live with their aunt, uncle, and cousins. Sundine says she may not have even pursued college if she weren\u2019t selected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/handler-scholarship\/\">Handler Scholar<\/a> last March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had the financial resources,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was the best thing that could happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An avid dancer who also enjoys competitive math, Sundine is interested in studying brain and cognitive sciences, with an eye toward earning a doctoral degree and researching drug and alcohol addiction.<\/p>\n<p>While at Rochester, she plans on joining the dance performance ensemble Louvre, among other clubs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px;\">\n<div id=\"Ao-33KnOEck\" class=\"youtube_codegena\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 225px;\" data-params=\"?&amp;theme=dark&amp;autoplay=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;rel=0\"><\/div>\n<script src='https:\/\/rawgit.com\/shaneapen\/Async-Youtube-Player\/master\/async_youtube_player.js'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Britney Waldrop<\/h2>\n<p><em>Hoover, Alabama<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Britney Waldrop found Rochester by accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was on Common App and meant to click on the University of Richmond, but clicked Rochester instead,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>About halfway through the application, she realized her mistake, but also something else:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized I loved everything about this place, especially the open curriculum, and I decided to apply.\u201d She paid a visit to campus last March.<\/p>\n<p>Waldrop is interested in studying English and philosophy. Activities including Mock Trial, Debate Union, and Students\u2019 Association Government\u2014as well as opportunities for education abroad\u2014have already caught her eye.<\/p>\n<p>She says Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, is \u201ccompletely different\u201d from Rochester, but that\u2019s OK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weather\u2019s different, the food\u2019s different, and the people are different. I love that Rochester has diners on every corner. All of that is so strange to me, but I absolutely love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some things are more familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was completely shocked by the Southern hospitality that everyone on campus has,\u201d she says. \u201cOver and over, Rochester stole my heart when I least expected it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 1,400 first-year University students began their college journey when classes started Wednesday on River Campus.
