University of Rochester Life Trustee Alan Batkin \u201966 and his wife, Jane, have established a professorship in Jewish studies. Their generosity will help strengthen academic and research activities in Jewish studies, furthering the understanding of Jewish history, culture, language, and religion across the University and beyond. The couple made the gift in honor of two milestones: Alan\u2019s 50th class reunion and the couple\u2019s 50th wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n

In recognition of her scholarship and teaching acumen, Nora Rubel has been named the inaugural holder of the Jane and Alan Batkin Endowed Professorship in Jewish Studies. Rubel is also an associate professor of religion at Rochester and director of the University\u2019s Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women\u2019s Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreating this professorship was a way for us to give back to a place that has given us so much,\u201d said Alan Batkin, who noted that three generations of the Batkin family have attended the University, including his and Jane\u2019s two children, Amy Knox \u201990 and Andrew Batkin \u201994, as well as Jane\u2019s late mother, Selma Mintz \u201934. \u201cWe established this for the sake of history\u2014to honor our family history as well as Jewish history and to encourage the teaching of ideas by an accomplished scholar.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessorships are among the most significant means we have to recognize our academic leaders,\u201d said Gloria Culver, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences. \u201cNora is incredibly deserving of this honor\u2014she is passionate about research and deeply committed to teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful to the Batkins for this honor,\u201d said Rubel. \u201cTo me, it not only recognizes my work and commitment to Jewish studies, but also underscores the importance of promoting cultural history and understanding\u2014something crucial in today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubel earned a master\u2019s degree in religion and culture from Boston University and her PhD in religion from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A faculty member in Rochester\u2019s Department of Religion and Classics since 2007, she is the author of Doubting the Devout: The Ultra-Orthodox in the Jewish American Imagination<\/em> (Columbia University Press, 2009), a coeditor of Religion, Food, and Eating in North America<\/em> (Columbia University Press, 2014), and the author of multiple journal articles and essays.<\/p>\n

Alan Batkin is the chairman and CEO of Converse Associates, a consulting firm, and currently serves as a life trustee of the University of Rochester. An alumnus of the University, he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in industrial engineering in 1966 and continued his education at New York University, receiving his MBA in 1968.<\/p>\n

Along with his wife Jane, a retired school psychologist who currently facilitates bereavement groups for children, Alan remains active within the University and throughout his community. He currently sits on the board of four public companies and is an active board member of numerous non-profits including the Brookings Institution, the International Rescue Committee (where he is Chairman Emeritus), MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, the Mass General Center for Global Health (which he chairs), and the New York City Police Foundation.<\/p>\n

Jane is a member of the advisory board for the Greenwich (Connecticut) Hospital Women\u2019s Health Initiative and serves on the board of the Breast Cancer Alliance, the Greenwich United Jewish Appeal Federation, and the YWCA of Greenwich.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
