{"id":285162,"date":"2017-11-30T09:40:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T14:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=285162"},"modified":"2017-12-04T09:46:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T14:46:32","slug":"posters-present-visual-history-aids-epidemic-285162","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/posters-present-visual-history-aids-epidemic-285162\/","title":{"rendered":"Posters present a visual history of AIDS epidemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"side-right\" style=\"width: 33%;\">\n<h2>World AIDS Day events<\/h2>\n<p>Stephen Dewhurst, Dean&#8217;s Professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and vice dean for research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Bill Valenti,\u00a0clinical associate professor of medicine and\u00a0senior vice president for organizational advancement for Trillium Health, will are scheduled to take part in a discussion about World AIDS Day on WXXI&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Connections with Evan Dawson<\/em> at 1 p.m. <a href=\"http:\/\/wxxinews.org\/programs\/connections\">Listen live<\/a> or at 1370AM.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s Center for AIDS Research will host a <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2bd323cc3cebb3aa0e433f243&amp;id=568f63a07f&amp;e=39c18a6e13\">World AIDS Day scientific symposium<\/a> from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Class of \u201962 Auditorium (G-9425), Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>The Medical Center\u2019s HIV Clinic will be selling holiday ornaments at Caf\u00e9 601 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit the clinic\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/medicine\/infectious-disease\/patient-care\/aids-center\/donations.aspx\">HIV Treatment Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For decades, Edward Atwater \u201950, a professor emeritus of medicine at the Medical Center, has collected medical history artifacts. In 2007, he began turning his collection of more than 8,000 AIDS education posters over to the University.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.lib.rochester.edu\/ur\/university-rochester-aids-education-collection\">AIDS Education Poster Collection<\/a>, housed in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation, is one of the world\u2019s largest single collections of visual resources related to the disease. The posters date from the onset of the epidemic in 1981 to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Lacher-Feldman, assistant dean and Joseph N. Lambert &amp; Harold B. Schleifer Director of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, is still surprised at how people use the collection, in the classroom and for research.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/visualizing-the-aids-epidemic-aids-education-posters_us_5a207935e4b0545e64bf914b\">In today&#8217;s Huffington Post:<br \/>\nVisualizing The AIDS Epidemic: A Look At The U Of Rochester\u2019s Stunning AIDS Education Posters<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s remarkable to see how many different ways students use them in their work,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Everything from linguistics to anthropology to foreign language classes that use them for translation. It&#8217;s amazing.&#8221; The posters come from 120 different countries and represent 76 different languages.<\/p>\n<p>For the fall of 2019, says Lacher-Feldman, the libraries are partnering with the Memorial Art Gallery for a large exhibit tentatively titled &#8220;Graphic Art in Global Health.&#8221; The curators plan to open the show at the MAG and then take it to other museums across the country.<\/p>\n<h3>This year&#8217;s most visited posters<\/h3>\n<p>The sample presented here represents only a small cross-section taken from the most popular posters in the online collection.
