DATE, TIME, PLACE:<\/b>\u00a0Thursday, June 27, 4:15 p.m., at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.<\/p>\n

WHAT:<\/b>\u00a0University of Rochester experimental psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan will deliver the opening talks at the\u00a05th International Conference on Self-Determination Theory<\/a>. The four-day conference is bringing to Rochester more than 500 psychologists from 38 countries to share the latest scientific insights into the mysteries of human motivation.<\/p>\n

In 1985, Deci and Ryan developed self-determination theory. Today, their psychological framework has become a leading theory of motivation, and the two scientists rank among the world’s most influential researchers in psychology. The theory maintains that motivation originates from within, grounded in basic human needs to develop competence, to act according to our own will on behalf of goals we find meaningful, and to connect to others and our environment.<\/p>\n

At this year’s conference, more than 400 talks and posters will report on discoveries that can lead to more fulfilling relationships, more effective parenting, better educational outcomes, enhanced work and athletic performance, and more.<\/p>\n
