{"id":297282,"date":"2018-02-14T11:31:03","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T16:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=297282"},"modified":"2018-02-14T11:31:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T16:31:35","slug":"kenneth-teegarden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/kenneth-teegarden\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Institute of Optics director Kenneth Teegarden dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_298422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-298422\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-298422 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/teegarden-vert.jpg\" alt=\"photo of Kenneth Teegarden\" width=\"400\" height=\"549\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-298422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kenneth Teegarden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kenneth Teegarden, a former director of the Institute of Optics and a member of its faculty for more than 60 years, was an expert in solid state physics, particularly the interaction of light with glass, semiconductors, and other materials.<\/p>\n<p>Teegarden, who died February 1, 2018, was also the first director of the University\u2019s Materials Science program.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 1983, he led the New York State Center for Advanced Optical Technology. Based at the Institute, it was one of five centers created by the state to foster university-industry programs to develop technologies with high economic potential.<\/p>\n<p>Teegarden, who received his PhD from the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1954, joined the Institute of Optics that year as a research associate, was promoted to assistant professor, then achieved associate professor with tenure in 1961 and full professor in 1966. When he retired in 2015 he was awarded\u00a0the status of professor emeritus.<\/p>\n<p>He served as director of the Institute of Optics starting in 1981, not long after the institute moved into the Space Science Center (now called Wilmot Hall).\u00a0 He served until 1987. \u201cThe new building as well as the explosion of applications of laser optics into all sorts of new industries\u00a0 . . . gave rise to increased expectations, and increased accomplishment,\u201d notes <em>A Jewel in the Crown<\/em>, a history of the institute. \u201cThe number of students, both undergraduate and graduate, rose quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teegarden joined the Institute of Optics in 1954 and served as its director from 1981 until 1987.
