Four student teams representing the College<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Simon Business School<\/a> will compete this month in regional semifinals for the Hult Prize, the world\u2019s largest social entrepreneurship contest.<\/p>\n

First prize is $1 million in seed capital, presented by former president Bill Clinton at the United Nations in September.<\/p>\n

Last year, four University international students<\/a> comprised one of the final eight teams out of more than 50,000 applicants. This year, more than 100,000 teams applied worldwide.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Hult Challenge, selected by President Clinton, is: \u201cHarnessing the power of energy to transform the lives of 10 million people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ain Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> is excited to support the four Rochester teams,\u201d says Ain associate director Natalie Antal. \u201cThe interdisciplinary nature of each team will certainly be an asset as the competition is especially fierce this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a look at the four teams competing in the regional semifinals this month:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Plate Technologies<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Plan:\u00a0<\/strong>To provide an alternative to open-fire cooking to populations in developing nations\u2014portable stoves powered by renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n

Members:<\/strong>\u00a0Dilshawn Gamage \u201919 (biomedical engineering; data science), Annamarie Forestiere \u201918 (business; music), Nicholas Cheng \u201918 (financial economics; psychology), and Chase Lindemann \u201919 (physics; economics).<\/p>\n

Competing in:<\/strong>\u00a0Dubai, March 9-10<\/p>\n

Surya<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Plan:<\/strong>\u00a0To provide low-cost rechargeable battery banks that will power a household for two weeks to populations without access to electricity.<\/p>\n

Members:<\/strong>\u00a0Dhivya Vijayakumar \u201918S (MBA) (competitive strategy; finance), Swapna Kale \u201918S (MBA) (business system consulting), Vidushi Pandit \u201918S (MBA) (computers and information systems), and Fahad \u201918S (MBA) (finance and operations), who goes by one name.<\/p>\n

Competing in:<\/strong>\u00a0Toronto, March 9-10<\/p>\n

UR Connected<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Plan: <\/strong>To create a wearable assistive technology that aims to improve self-care and social interaction among isolated elderly populations in developed nations.<\/p>\n

Members:<\/strong>\u00a0Allen Chen \u201919 (neuroscience), Hetince Zhao \u201918 (biomedical engineering), Isaac Wong \u201919 (computational biology; computer science), and Krista Pipho \u201918 (cell and developmental biology).<\/p>\n

Competing in:<\/strong>\u00a0Singapore, March 16-17<\/p>\n

Ubuntu<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Plan: <\/strong>To bring the nano-membrane toilet, which harnesses the power of renewable energy and can treat human waste on-site without external energy or water, to households in emerging markets such as China, Mexico, and South Africa.<\/p>\n
