{"id":308462,"date":"2018-03-29T15:09:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T19:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=308462"},"modified":"2018-03-29T15:17:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-29T19:17:43","slug":"students-tackle-grand-challenges-national-academy-engineers-308462","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/students-tackle-grand-challenges-national-academy-engineers-308462\/","title":{"rendered":"Students tackle grand engineering challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Luke Dengler, Eva Hansen and Raymond Chin, the quest is nearly finished.<\/p>\n<p>For nine other students, the quest has just begun.<\/p>\n<p>The 12 students are the first to seek recognition as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/grand-challenges\/\">Grand Challenges Scholars<\/a> at the University of Rochester, which joined the National Academy of Engineering program last summer. Students from any discipline can apply, including humanities and social sciences.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h2>NAE\u2019s Grand Challenges for Engineering<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sustainability<\/strong><br \/>\nManage the nitrogen cycle<br \/>\nProvide energy from fusion<br \/>\nDevelop carbon sequestration methods<br \/>\nMake solar energy economical<br \/>\nProvide access to clean water<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health<\/strong><br \/>\nAdvance health informatics<br \/>\nEngineer better medicines<br \/>\nReverse-engineer the brain<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security<\/strong><br \/>\nRestore and improve urban infrastructure<br \/>\nPrevent nuclear terror<br \/>\nSecure cyberspace<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joy of Living<\/strong><br \/>\nAdvance personalized learning<br \/>\nEnhance virtual reality<br \/>\nEngineer the tools of scientific discovery<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The initiative is aimed at educating the next generation of students to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing society in the 21st century. Students are asked to come up with their own combinations of research, interdisciplinary scholarship, entrepreneurship, global experiences, and community-engaged learning to explore one of 14 grand challenges identified by the NAE. Students who meet the requirements are listed at the Grand Challenges web site and receive a medal at graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great way for students to take ownership of their education here and gain an edge when applying for graduate school or jobs,\u201d says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School.<\/p>\n<p>Completing the Grand Challenges \u201cis a valuable capstone to a student&#8217;s undergraduate education because it ties together the many experiences they have had during their time at Rochester under a central theme,\u201d adds Emma Derisi, an academic counselor with the Hajim School.\u00a0 \u201cIt showcases the value and inter-relatedness of courses, projects, and service that are inside and outside of the major. This makes it easy to talk about and understand seemingly disparate experiences by connecting them back to a Grand Challenge. The result is a culmination of all a student has done, presented in one thoughtful, integrated package. It&#8217;s great material for interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before they knew about the program, Dengler, Hansen and Chin were engaged in experiential learning that could be applied toward the requirements of the Grand Challenges program.<\/p>\n<p>Both Dengler, a senior in chemical engineering, and Hansen, a senior in biomedical engineering, explored the challenge of providing access to clean water while serving with the University\u2019s Engineers Without Borders chapter all four years as undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter designed and installed a system to provide potable water to a school in Don Juan, Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Both participated in trips to Don Juan where they conducted on-site bacterial and chemical analysis of the water. They also took classes in public health, and served in leadership roles in EWB.<\/p>\n<p>Chin, a senior in biomedical engineering, says the Grand Challenges program \u201callows me to reflect and appreciate the accomplishments I have achieved as an undergraduate.\u201d He has explored the challenge of \u201cengineering better medicines\u201d through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A DAAD Rise internship in Leipzig, Germany in 2016, engineering 3-D micro-environments to control cancer cells.<\/li>\n<li>A research internship at Pfizer Pharmaceutical in 2017, studying drugs related to cardiovascular ad metabolic disease.<\/li>\n<li>A graduate level course on the FDA and intellectual property.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in a University\/FDA regulatory science competition.<\/li>\n<li>Additional courses in neurological diseases and the drugs engineered to treat them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe have a number of faculty across the University with interests in virtually every one of the NAE Grand Challenges,\u201d Heinzelman says, \u201cfrom biomedical research in our Department of Biomedical Engineering and at our School of Medicine and Dentistry, to fusion research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, to novel educational models developed at the Warner School, to the research that occurs within our Goergen Institute for Data Science, our Augmented and Virtual Reality initiative, and our Center for Energy and the Environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_308702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-308702\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-308702 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dengler-with-student.jpg\" alt=\"University student works together, reading a survey with a child\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dengler-with-student.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dengler-with-student-630x417.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dengler-with-student-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-308702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luke Dengler \u201918 works with a child at a school in the Dominican Republic. (University of Rochester photo \/ University Engineers Without Borders)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis makes it possible for students to obtain rich experiences in any of the Grand Challenges in which they are interested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Norwood, the Hajim School assistant dean of undergraduate studies, told students students at an introductory meeting that \u201cOne of the reasons NAE started this is because all of the people in NAE are my age or older. We\u2019re not going to be solving these problems. It\u2019s going to be those of you in the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madhaven Murali, a freshman in mechanical engineering, is hoping to qualify as a grand challenges scholar by \u201cengineering the tools for scientific discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngineers lead their community \u2013 and the world \u2013 forward into the future,\u201d Murali wrote in his application to the program. \u201cThe NAE\u2019s Grand Challenges are a compilation of some of society\u2019s most pressing questions, and it\u2019s about time that I participate in the journey towards a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the Grand Challenges Scholars program or how to participate, contact Emma Derisi at <a href=\"mailto:Emma.Derisi@rochester.edu\">Emma.Derisi@rochester.edu<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve students are the first to seek recognition as Grand Challenges Scholars by the National Academy of Engineering.
