{"id":309852,"date":"2018-04-10T12:51:46","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T16:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=309852"},"modified":"2018-04-17T16:14:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-17T20:14:33","slug":"three-undergraduates-earn-critical-language-scholarships-309852","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/three-undergraduates-earn-critical-language-scholarships-309852\/","title":{"rendered":"Three undergraduates earn Critical Language Scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three University students have been offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clscholarship.org\/\">US Department of State Critical Language Scholarships<\/a> and will take part in language and cultural immersion programs overseas this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The program launched in 2006 and includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. It\u2019s part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/news\/student-award-winners-2018\/\">Learn more about the University of Rochester students earning awards and scholarships in 2018.<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>John Cole \u201919 will study Mandarin Chinese in Xi\u2019an, China; Joy Nicholas \u201919 will study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania; and Jacqueline Tran \u201918 will study Arabic in Amman, Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Cole is a dual major in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/eco\/\">economics<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/psc\/undergraduate\/ir-major.php\">international relations<\/a> from Oberlin, Ohio, and has been studying Chinese since he was 7. This fall, he\u2019ll study at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo receive this scholarship is in many ways a product of over a decade of hard work and passion,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m elated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas majors in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ph\/undergraduate\/majors\/health-behavior-society.html\">health, behavior, and society<\/a>. She\u2019s the first Rochester student selected for the Swahili program and received a full tuition merit scholarship from the University as part of the Posse Foundation, for qualified urban students from the Washington, D.C., area. Her ultimate goal is to conduct global health research \u201cthat promotes capacity building as well as improved health conditions for women and children in underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>She has family in Tanzania, where Swahili is among the principal languages spoken, and hopes the scholarship will help her \u201cprepare for a career in more community-based research that one day will allow me to help the rural communities my mom and her family came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tran, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ant\/undergraduate\/\">anthropology<\/a> major from Brooklyn and a transfer student, says the scholarship is a \u201cfoundational tool\u201d for her to enhance her Arabic skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m interested in a career in international development, focusing on the Middle East and North Africa region,\u201d she says. \u201cThis scholarship means more to me than words can express.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole, Nicholas, and Tran bring the total number of Critical Language Scholarship participants from the University to 23, with at least one chosen every year except 2007.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Cole \u201919 will study Mandarin Chinese in Xi\u2019an, China;
