Students presented projects in topics ranging from fluid dynamics, deforestation in Bolivia, and nomad cultures in Morocco to prenatal depression, meteorites, and software that affects education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what University research is all about,\u201d said Joan Saab, vice provost of academic affairs. \u201cIt\u2019s students crossing boundaries between disciplines, asking questions, and coming up with innovative and exciting answers to the challenges that face us in the contemporary world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 students participated in the exposition this year, representing some of the \u201cmost accomplished undergraduate research throughout the college,\u201d said Paul Burgett, vice president and senior advisor to the president, who presented several awards to students. \u201cWe like to honor those whose work is on the tip of the spear, so to speak; those whose work is groundbreaking and transformative.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_316832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-316832\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-316832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/undergraduate-research-expo-posters-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/undergraduate-research-expo-posters-2018.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/undergraduate-research-expo-posters-2018-193x117.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/undergraduate-research-expo-posters-2018-630x380.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/undergraduate-research-expo-posters-2018-768x464.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-316832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The poster presentation fair in the Medical Center&#8217;s Flaum Atrium allowed a place for all undergraduate students who had conducted research in the last year to present their findings to the College community. New this year was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-award-recognizes-teaching-research-mentorship-299942\/\">the College Award for Undergraduate Teaching and Research Mentorship<\/a><\/strong>, funded by Frederick Lewis \u201968 (PhD) and his wife Susan Rice Lewis. David McCamant, an associate professor of chemistry, was the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/david-mccamant-wins-first-college-award-undergraduate-teaching-research-mentorship-312672\/\">inaugural recipient<\/a><\/strong> of the award.<\/p>\n<p>Three exceptional faculty members were also recognized with the Student Association Professor of the Year Award:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social sciences: Carolina Caetano, Department of
